Scientific Board

Richard Gibbs, Ph.D., Founder
Dr. Gibbs has been a pioneer in the development of novel DNA sequencing methodologies and other genomics techniques. Receiving a B.Sc. (Hons) and a Ph.D. in the area of radiation biology at the University of Melbourne, Australia, Dr. Gibbs subsequently moved to the United States for further training. He has since acquired 20 years of experience in the sequencing and genomics fields, and now holds an appointment as a full Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, where he serves as Director of the Human Genome Sequencing Center.

John W. Belmont, M.D., Ph.D., Founder
Dr. Belmont is active as both a clinician and a research scientist at Baylor College of Medicine. He serves as an Associate Professor, with appointments in the departments of Molecular and Human Genetics, Pediatrics, Microbiology and Immunology. He is also founder and Co-Director of the Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic at Texas Children's Hospital. Dr. Belmont obtained a B.A. in Microbiology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1974. He earned his Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from Baylor College of Medicine in 1980 and 1981 respectively. He maintains certification by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Medical Genetics. Dr. Belmont has published extensively on topics in immunology, human genetic disorders, and stem cell biology.

Professional Staff

Fei Lu, M.D., Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Lu has five years of medical education and clinical practice experience through Anhui Medical University in the P.R. of China. She has over 15 years of experience in biochemical and molecular biology techniques and has focused closely on the development and growth of automated, large scale sequencing projects. Much of her early experience in the field of molecular biology was gained as a scientist in the research labs at Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Molecular and Human Genetics. Dr. Lu has published extensively on topics in human molecular genetics. Since 1994, Dr. Fei Lu has been integral in the mobilization of SeqWright to its current role as a leader in the field of contract molecular biology services.

K. Bradford Thomas, Ph.D., Bioinformatics Director
Dr. Thomas received his B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of Alabama. His Ph.D. in Pharmacology was earned from the Emory University School of Medicine in 1991. He has extensive experience in clinical molecular genetics including analytical biochemical and molecular genetic methods. Dr. Thomas directs the bioinformatics aspects of all projects involving large-scale sequence analysis and assembly.

Meredith Berry , Ph.D., Director of Quality Assurance
Meredith Berry received her B.S. in Biology from Trinity University and her Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from Baylor College of Medicine. She has 9 years of technical and research experience in molecular genetics and is responsible for ensuring that SeqWright’s productions are compliant with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) as outlined by the FDA.

Scientific Staff

Don L. Tucker, Ph.D., Scientist/Project Manager: FDA/GLP-Level Projects
Dr. Tucker received his B.S. in Science Education from Oklahoma State University in 1992 and his Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology from Purdue University in 1999. He has acquired a wide range of applied molecular biology experience, with successful post-doctoral research performed at the University of Oklahoma and the NASA Johnson Space Center in collaboration with the University of Houston. Dr. Tucker is primarily responsible for the management of FDA-level, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Continuing Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) projects (sequencing and molecular biology) performed at SeqWright, including project development, oversight and reporting.

Jason Schultz, Ph.D., Scientist/Project Manager: Cloning & Mutagenesis
Dr. Schultz earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of California – Davis and continued on in his education to earn his doctorate in Biomedical Research from the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center – Institute of Biosciences and Technology. Dr. Schultz has over 10 years of experience with a myriad of cutting edge molecular biological techniques and has joined the SeqWright team of scientists to lead the Cloning group, which specializes in simple and complex subcloning, site-directed and random mutagenesis, and gene construction.

Wei Yu, Ph.D., Scientist/Project Manager: Microarray Services
Dr. Wei Yu received a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and a Master’s degree in Microbiology from Anhui Medical University in China. In 1991, he earned a Master’s degree in Microbiology at University of Mississippi, Medical Center. In 1995, Dr. Yu went on to complete a Ph.D. in Virology from the University of Texas, Medical School at Houston. He completed postdoctoral training at the Human Genome Sequencing Center, Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Yu has extensive experience in cDNA library construction and sequencing, BAC microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization, and Affymetrix Microarray-based technology. He currently runs the Affymetrix Microarray group.
